LIBERTY N' JUSTICE - The Cigar Chronicles Vol.1 (2013)

LIBERTY N' JUSTICE - The Cigar Chronicles Vol.1 (2013) mp3 download

*

Previously we have presented in this blog the Vol.2 from LIBERTY N' JUSTICE new double album "The Cigar Chronicles Vol. 1 & 2".
Now it's time take a look at Volume 1.
In this one, LnJ's masterminds Justin Murr & JK Northrup features again a dream team of star guests, but now doing covers of famous songs and acts.

This is not strange for Liberty N' Justice, as this project always included a couple of covers in their albums, paying tribute to known bands re-working their hits in their own melodic hard rock way.
But on "The Cigar Chronicles Vol. 1 - The Covers" the song selection is not shorter than... bizarre. I'd say, unmatched by any covers disc I have ever come across.
Never have I found a melodic hard rock project that so unashamedly tackled everyone from U2 to Whitney Houston to the Bee Gees and Village People to Hanson, for crying out loud!
But you know what, it works most the time, in fact; Rocks!

CJ Snare of Firehouse (who also helped with the production of the disc) rips into a killer modern hard rock take on of U2's monster hit "Pride", and Lionel Richie only wishes he had the pipes of James Christian (House of Lords) who simply transforms the slick '80s pop of "Dancing On The Ceiling" into a surprisingly fun melodic hard rock track with a nice groove.
I would challenge just about anyone to identify what Seann Nichols and Twisted Sister's Eddie Ojeda warped "Ice Ice Baby" into. For that matter, Stevie Rachelle (Tuff) brings an angry, sleazy edge to "I Can't Dance" that I don't think Genesis probably ever considered, and he pulls off another of the top tracks on the disc as a result.
Talking about great versions, it's a pleasure to hear Kip Winger not only absolutely making his own the great (and wisely arranged) acoustic take on "Stayin' Alive", but to also hear it turned into something that was nearly unrecognizable until the chorus kicked in is truly amazing to discover. Hands down to one of the best tracks on this collection.
"Iris", which was already a decent crossover rock hit for the Goo Goo Dolls, is reworked and buzzed-up a bit on the guitars and Tony Harnell's vocals bring a power to the track that was not as evident in the original. This version is definitely a harder rocker with less top 40 aspirations and more of a rock attitude.

Likewise, Phil Lewis and Chris Green turn in a nice effort on "You're So Vain", going in a definitely more Faster Pussycat-than-Carly Simon version on this classic tune. This LnJ arrangement is more modern feeling than Pussycat's version, and Green's guitar has a fuzzed-up tone that definitely alters the feel of the track, and Lewis' vocals slither all over this number oh-so-snidely, really giving it a grimey, dirty touch, which is nice.
One of the more surprising moments here is the cover of Whitney Houston's "Queen Of The Night". The 'tough chick' vocal approach of Selena McVey really dominate this song which also features some tasty guitar work from Brooke St. James of Tyketto fame. The programmed drums in this track works pretty well to give some depth to the track which I think may have come across as pretty sparse sounding with a human drummer.
There are a couple of songs that don't quite hit the mark for me, but even these are at least given an honest effort and not just dialed in for a paycheck. These are N'Sync's megahit "Bye Bye Bye" with its semi-industrial sound, although Cinderella's Jeff LaBar, as usual, does an interesting guitar approach here, and Chaz West's angrier vocal style definitely changes the boy band's pop tone.
I'm also not 100% sold on this version of "YMCA", to be honest. This is a viable effort to update it and turn it into a hard rocking number, but without the campy approach of the original, I think the effort is lost in translation despite my love for just about anything that Kelly Keeling does vocally.

Overall, while I still prefer the Vol.2 (The Originals) of "The Cigar Chronicles" package, this is a very nice contribution from yet another incredible cast of performers and musicians.
One thing that really turns this project successful is the very good production. JK Northrup handled it with CJ Snare twisting the knobs and doing the mixing. Each of these songs is crisp and clear with solid, clean production that doesn't vary in sound quality, volume level or clarity from track to track.
That is one of the most annoying things with a lot of covers or tribute albums; the production is quite bad. Not the case here, as Mr. Northrup and Mr. Snare prove they are more than capable and experienced.
People who are looking for tired sounding reproductions of their all-time favorites need to look elsewhere as nothing here is left untouched or unaltered in an attempt to pump new life and new feel into these tracks.
And believe me, most of them are really, really good and rocking.

LIBERTY N' JUSTICE - The Cigar Chronicles Vol.2 (2013)

LIBERTY N' JUSTICE - The Cigar Chronicles Vol.2 (2013) the originals mp3 download

*

As all of you already know, LIBERTY N' JUSTICE is the All-Star project put together by Justin Murr almost twenty years ago.
Now with JK Northrup as the core force since the last album, they're are presenting the most ambitious release by the band ever: "The Cigar Chronicles Vol. 1 & 2".
Broken into Volume 1 & Volume 2, Murr & Northrup have assembled another who’s who of Melodic Hard Rock stars in this cavalcade of musical bliss.
It features 70 (!) guest musicians from bands like Winger, Firehouse, Slaughter, Warrant, Dokken, Foreigner, TNT, Lynch Mob, Nelson, Trixter, Great White, Keel, Guardian... just to name some.

Volume 1 follows the trend of the last 5-6 years with an array of covers, LNJ paying tribute to famous acts from different genres. We will treating this one soon on these pages.
Now let's concentrate in the second Volume "The Originals", featuring 13 cuts from the songwriting team of Justin Murr and JK Northrup (along with assistance and co-writes from a handful of others). This new set of songs bring a level of skill to this LnJ collection that has never been equalled on any previous album from this project.
These 13 tracks are strong melodic hard rockers with thick guitars, catchy choruses and some memorable melodies. There's a definite '80s vibe on most of the tunes, but with modern production values and a kicking sound.

From the start, the first permanent Liberty N' Justice drummer Michael Feighan (plays on almost all songs) thunders in opener "Devil His Dues", and it is clear Liberty N' Justice has stepped up their game. The production is crisp and clean giving a distinct voice to each of the instruments involved in a manner not heard on a full LnJ project before. The huge backing vocals are a perfect compliment to the exceptional lead vocals of Derrick LeFevre - the former frontman for Lillian Axe, and the lead guitar work of Vic Rivera is sweet and powerful on this kickin' rocker that sets a high bar on the disc.
Next track "The Greatest" features the vocal debut of permanent LnJ vocalist David Cagle. His smooth yet husky driving tonality fits in the LNJ mold perfectly. Slickly produced, the song itself is pure LNJ, hooky edgy melodic and upbeat.

Gunnar Nelson of his namesake band, Nelson, takes center-stage next on "Cupid's Gonna Bleed". An outstanding uptempo number with a slight modern approach featuring Steve Brown from Trixter launching into a tasty melodic solo that will have listeners sitting up and taking notice as few times can I recall him ripping through a solo like this in his main band.
Eric Dover of Slash's Snakepit slows things down for the first time on this album with "Under Construction" and he gives a gritty, emotion-laden performance on this track that also pairs the long-toothed Great White guitarist Mark Kendall, with Jaguar Blaze axe-slinger Ian Keith Hafner. If this was 1987, lighters would be burning bright all over an arena somewhere as this song echoed to a close.
Ted Poley of Danger Danger picks the pace up again with "Been There Done That". Again, big layers of backing vocals lend themselves to the chorus and Richard Kendrick (Straitjacket Smile) packs a punch on his solo heading into the final chorus of the track.

"Grace" slow down things again, but not as a typical ballad. This commercial melodic cut delivers a surprising guitar solo from Mark Slaughter. Formerly known for his piercingly high vocal style, Slaughter shows that he is no slouch on the guitar here, as he handled both the main and outro with class. As it stands, this track already packs a vocal wallop as former Unruly Child Philip Bardowell trades off vocal duties with German vocal legend, Michael Bormann of Jaded Heart. Truly an amazing piece of music.
"Sucker Punched" is an interesting number that features a truly amazing, completely unheralded guitar hero in the form of one Mr. Xander Demos. Along with Jerry Dixon of Warrant fame, both deliver an aggressive-yet-still-melodic hard rocker that also showcases the vocal talents of Hotel Diablo's Rick Stitch.
"Broken Bones" features yet another vocalist I had never heard in one Mr. Giancarlo Floridia of the band Faithsedge. He has a Sebastian Bach-meets-Jamie Rowe style that works well with this hard rocker that has a surprising hot guest guitar solo from country-rocker Greg Martin of the Kentucky Headhunters.

Now arrives the fully recorded version of "Sin", the last known recording from former Warrant frontman Jani Lane. We have already been treated to a heart-wrenching acoustic version of this song on the previous Liberty N' Justice release Hell Is Coming To Breakfast, but I knew that this version was the one that Justin, JK, and the rest really wanted people to hear. As it is, Jani Lane's vocals are every bit as haunting and soul-scarring here as they were in the acoustic version, but with the extra power of a properly amped-up Bill Leverty (Firehouse) and Keri Kelli (who has played for everyone), this song reaches a level I did not know was possible for it.
"Give 'Em A Light" brings out yet another stellar vocal performance, this time from one of my all-time favorites, Paul Shortino (King Kobra / Rough Cutt / Quiet Riot). Shortino's blues-soaked, life-lived vocal delivery is the perfect compliment to this driving rocker that also features his pal Dave Kenzerling of King Kobra on lead guitar. This lighter-hearted number is the perfect pick-me-up to follow "Sin", and is strong enough in its performance to not be overshadowed by the previous track.
Louis St. August of the under-appreciated melodic Boston rock band MASS takes the mic for the next track, "Daddy Long Legs". Tim Gaines of Stryper handles the bass (with JK Northrup on guitar and drums) on this funny track perfectly tongue-in-cheek and delightfully light-hearted. Mr. Murr's ode to the song's subject is a good one with a catchy chorus and some excellent vocal work, both out front and in the backing department.

Speaking of Justin Murr, his penchant for film rears its head again on "The Cigar Chronicles". On the precious CD the listener got to feast their ears on Murr's ode to the Bruce Willis Die Hard series of movies. This time, Stallone's Rocky character is lifted straight from the first movie as, after having his face is beaten to a swollen, bruised mess, Rocky begs his trainer "I can't see, you gotta open my eyes. Cut me, Mick". In this lyrical incarnation, Ron Keel handles the Rocky character's line in over the top Keel-the band vocal fashion and swagger in this song about not giving up when life gets hard.
New Great White's singer Terry Ilous and Hardline's Alessandro Del Vecchio provide the bombastic voices in closer "Tomorrow", a big, inspiring ballad, that really has a full band feel to it, as Ron Wisko from The Storm / Foreigner / David Lee Roth Band handles the big drum sound here, with former Bloodgood guitar hero PK Mitchell tackling the melodic guitar solos.
A really nice way to close the disc, this song is by no means a leftover from the recording sessions and is not buried at the end as a sign of weakness. I look at it as a way to wrap the album back around to the beginning in one big, nearly perfect loop.

"The Cigar Chronicles Vol. 2" features the best pack of original songs ever penned by Justin Murr & Co. Songwriting, arrangements and musicianship are at a serious premium across the board, something we come to expect with the all talented people involved.
This is a truly complete musical experience featuring hooky rockers and emotional ballads, marrying all great things about Melodic Hard Rock past and present with it's modern touches and some fine humour.
Everything works here... and this is only 'Half' of "The Cigar Chronicles" release.
Stay tuned for the other CD.

LIBERTY N' JUSTICE - Hell Is Coming To Breakfast (2012)

VANGOUGH - Kingdom Of Ruin (2011)

*

Justin Murr and his current partners Vic Rivera and JK Northrup have been hard at work for the past couple of years on the next LIBERTY N' JUSTICE album 'The Cigar Chronicles', an ambitious, two-disc project of both new songs and cover tunes.
However, that process has taken much longer than initially planned, and Murr wasn't happy with leaving his fans without new L N' J music for that long.

So many new tracks of the recent recording sessions plus a couple of alternate mixes (including an acoustic version of "Sin" featuring the late Jani Lane) are being released as "Hell Is Coming To Breakfast".
One thing people will likely notice is that the songs here are a bit more aggressive in nature than a lot of Liberty N' Justice previous material, and the production has a bit of a modern feel in several spots.
The songs still hold a melodic quality that fits well with the sound and style of the vocalists that have been chosen for this release, but there is no denying there is an edge not present on the 'Chasing A Cure' album, for example.
This sonic edge does not carry over into the lyrics or the vibe, as these really show off a fun, goofy side of Liberty N' Justice that many people may not have heard before.
With such great track titles as "Nakatomi Plaze" (Die Hard fans rejoice), "Whack A Mole" and "Stretch Armstrong" it should be apparent that L N' J is mining some new territory here, or at least taking a new approach to their delivery.

The album's title track starts things off in the right direction, with a powerful vocal performance by Seann Nichols, formerly known as Sheldon Tarsha of Adler's Appetite. JK Northrup of King Kobra/XYZ handles the guitars here, as he does on several tracks on this album, and there is a nice solo that should keep fans of the melodic L N' J style very happy.
Follow-up "Mad Hatter" continues in this melodic direction with Donnie Vie's unmistakeable vocals shining on top of Northrup's smooth scales.
On "Whack A Mole" we hear the aforementioned aggressivity and much modern sound, but the tune is really catchy and the chorus extremely infectious.
"Thankful Heart" steers things sharply back into the more melodic, more typical Liberty N' Justice sound. Phillip Bardowell shines as usual in the vocal department, adorned with nice keyboards and fine guitars handled by Anthony Gravley. This is a cover of a forgotten Petra track, so expect religious lyrics but with a great message
.
"Nakatomi Plaza" may win Best Song Title of the Year awards, and "Stretch Armstrong" isn't far behind. Titles aside, these are two smoking songs, again featuring a slightly more modern sound that really show the power of this record. "Nakatomi" has a definitely a hard rockin' approach with fun lyrics referencing Die Hard movies.
"Stretch Armstrong" continues the more modern, yet still melodic craft and features some killer axe-work from Keri Kelli.

"Get Down" returns to more familiar L N' J territory as far as style goes, and Tony Mills (TNT / Shy) pulls off one of the best vocal performances of the disc. Mark Allen Lanoue of Chasing Karma lays down some really nice lead guitar tracks for this song, with Anthony Gravley handling the rhythm and bass guitars. This is a cover of an Audio Adrenaline song, but I have to say this version is melodic and catchy.
On "Your Memory Just Won't Do", despite the fact that CJ Snare is credited on the track, the Firehouse singer does not handle all the vocal duty here; it's shared with David Cagle, who has worked in L N' J before. An acoustic track featuring guitars by Alex Grossi of Quiet Riot fame.
Ex- Great White Jack Russell is featured on a reworked alternate mix of "Monkey Dance", which originally appeared a few years ago on the Independence Day album.
Another re-worked ald song is "What Do You Believe", which has different chorus and rhythm and the very good vocals of Mike Ledesma from Far Cry. In all reality, it is almost like two different songs with the lyrical and vocalist changes, and both tracks stands up well here.
Closing track is an acoustic version of "Sin" with the late Jani Lane. Anyone who has heard the electric version of this song knows how well it is written. However, when the electricity and distortion is stripped away, and Jani Lane's vocals are given the full, haunting range of emotion that he poured into this track, it truly becomes something both breathtakingly beautiful and achingly sad to listen to at the same time.

Overall, "Hell Is Coming To Breakfast" may be a tad bit disjointed due to the various styles that are employed here, but that is part of its charm.
The songs are good and well crafted, from melodious tunes to edgy rockers including calmer ballads. We have fine performances by all the artists involved and production is good, even in the couple demo versions.
A gift to the melodic hard rock fans who have been patiently waiting for new Liberty N' Justice material until the 'Cigar Chronicles' comes out.
Good Stuff.

LIBERTY N' JUSTICE - Forever 'Till The End (2012)

LIBERTY N' JUSTICE - Forever 'Till The End (2012)

*

The mastermind of LIBERTY N' JUSTICE project Justin Murr has been busy at work trying to complete there yet to be released double CD, “The Cigar Chronicles”.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday June 12th, Liberty n’ Justice just released a new single, and also is re-issuing there 1996 release “Forever Till The End” via digital outlets.
The album was remastered and new artwork was added for this special release. “Forever Till The End” shows a earlier poppier sound of LN'J, and features the vocals of ex-CBS recording artist Gregg Clemons.

Liberty n' Justice was founded in 1991 by Justin Murr and Patrick Marchand. Between some line-up changes, the band recorded two albums ('92 & '94) while toured the States to support them.
Murr and Marchand thought they were building momentum and decided to go back into the studio in 1996. By this time, the music scene was already changed, every major label passed on Liberty n' Justice, and the band was drawing very few people to its shows.

Just as Murr was about to trash the project, former CBS recording artist Gregg Clemons (a long-time recording buddy and co-writer of most of LnJ's songs) said he would sing leads on the new album.
Clemons took the recording of “Forever Till The End” to the next level.
At this time Liberty n' Justice was just a studio group, but the songs caught the attention of a publishing company in Nashville. At dinner they offered a very 'bad deal' which Murr turned down.
He gave up on music and the album remained officially unreleased.
After four years out of the music scenario, in 2000 Marchand called Murr and the two got together. After talking, they decided to record a fourth album, 'Bargain Bin', for Innate Records.
The tour presenting the disc was successful, but after that Liberty n' Justice disbanded again.

Liberty n' Justice had two lives, the band which ended in 2000 and the All-Star projects that started in 2004, more hard rock oriented and only with Murr at the helm.
“Forever Till The End” is part of the lesser known incarnation of the band; the nineties era. It was finally released in 2006 by Murr, but in limited quantities.
Now with this proper re-issue we have the opportunity to listen it.
The style and sound on “Forever Till The End” is not the hard 'n heavy we all know from this project developed during the past decade and continues to these days. This is more radio rock oriented, featuring songs with a rock 'n roll structure but in a more accessible, light sound.
Nothing outstanding, just a pleasant listen, a way to appreciate how this project has evolved with the years.
Cool.

LIBERTY N' JUSTICE - Stayin' Alive [ft. Kip Winger & JK Northrup] (2012)

LIBERTY N' JUSTICE - Stayin' Alive [ft. Kip Winger & JK Northrup] (2012)

*

LIBERTY N’ JUSTICE have released their new single, "Stayin' Alive" featuring Kip Winger (WINGER) and JK Northrup (XYZ, KING KOBRA). The track was mixed and mastered by CJ Snare of FIREHOUSE.

Liberty N' Justice's leader Justin Murr has this to say about the track; "This is one of the songs that will be on our soon to be released double CD, 'The Cigar Chronicles'.
Whatever you think of when you hear the words 'Stayin' Alive', forget about it... Kip Winger has done a killer new version of this '70s classic!"

This version indeed is an awesome take on the Bee Gees' classic with a curious approach; it's done with acoustic guitar but the kind that sound like a 'wall of guitars'. Truly powerful and original.
