If '82s 'Vinyl Confessions' was the album that approached Kansas to commercial mainstream, "Drastic Measures" definitely remains as their more radio-friendly album ever.
First of all, there was no sign of vocalist/violinist Robbie Steinhardt, whose role on the previous album had been much diluted in a search for a more commercial sound.

Secondly, Kerry Livgren only contributes just three songs to the album (the more prog oriented), compared to six by John and Dino Elefante.
On the plus side the band had drafted in producer Neil Kernon on the back of his success with several Hall & Oates albums, snagging him just before he would become synonymous with commercial hard rock bands like Dokken, Queensryche and Autograph.
Kernon actually did a great job with the material on "Drastic Measures", giving Kansas a punchy AOR sound they'd never had before.

The powerful opener "Fight Fire With Fire" is a classic slice of inventive AOR that the band still play occasionally today, and "Don't Take Your Love Away" has the kind of light and shade that they're known for.
Other Elefante compositions included the memorable melodic ballad "Andi", whilst the hi-tech of "Get Rich" is very modern for the era, where Kernon's touch is evident.
"Everybody's My Friend" and "Incident On A Bridge" are both urgent AOR numbers with heavy keyboards.
The three Livgren songs tell a tale of their own, being "End Of The Age" the more prog-friendly song but with accessible harmonies.


"Drastic Measures" is definitely a mid '80s AOR rock album, with great melodies and big keyboards, in the vein of Balance and on many passages, Journey and alikes.
The modern and brilliant production by Neil Kernon is now enhanced with a huge sound and extra clarity with this brand new 2011 remaster and Blu-spec CD edition.
On the Blu-spec CD's, the master used for replication is burned with a smaller and much more precise blue-violet laser to obtain more accurate pits. The Blu-Spec process even improves the SACD technology.
A must have for any '80s AOR fan.

Kansas were one of America’s most successful rock bands during the mid to late ‘70s. Their brand of progressive pomp rock had spawned several multi platinum albums and hit singles, including the ubiquitous radio staples ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ and ‘Dust In The Wind’.

By 1981, singer Steve Walsh had elected to leave the band, paving way for the appointment of a new vocalist, the previously unknown John Elefante.
Recorded in Los Angeles at Chateau Recorders with producer Ken Scott (Supertramp, Jeff Beck) and featuring Queen’s Roger Taylor on backing vocals, the band crafted a winning slice of melodic rock with all the twists and turns that you might expect from such masterful musicians.
"Vinyl Confessions", originally released in 1982, manages to remain true to the roots of Kansas, while at the same time noticeably moving from the band’s traditional sound of the ’70s into the more AOR-friendly ’80s.

John Elefante and his brother Dino contributed four of the album's strongest songs, with the album being co-produced by the band with Englishman Ken Scott - famous for his work with David Bowie and Supertramp.
The storming AOR anthem "Play The Game Tonight", which opens this album, was a big US hit, and there were many other strong moments on "Vinyl Confessions", as the commercial and beautiful ballad "Chasing Shadows".
But "Right Away", "Face It" and especially "Play On" were all written in a typical Kansas style, with Elefante's strong voice being really enjoyable.
Livgren weighed in with some great tracks too, particularly the busy "Windows" and the brilliant, multi-textured "CrossFire", and the heavily orchestrated "Diamonds And Pearls".


Having become increasingly rare on CD of late, "Vinyl Confessions" is now re-issued with the audio maximum technology.
On the Blu-spec CD's, the master used for replication is burned with a smaller and much more precise blue-violet laser to obtain more accurate pits.
The Blu-Spec process even improves the SACD technology.
A must have for any '80s AOR fan.

MICK McCONNELL - My Kinda Heaven (2011)

In the late eighties, England born Mick McConnell was part of a rock band in Germany and lived there for almost 2 years, and it was here that he met veteran rockers Smokie for the first time and immediately joined the band, where he still continues today as permanent guitarist.
While Smokie continue to enjoy regular tours, Mick still manages to find time to write and record his own material.
Now, Mick McConnell is proud to announce the release of his first solo album "My Kinda Heaven".

"My Kinda Heaven" is a beautifully crafted Classic Rock disc with some astonishing moments.
Mick has recruited the services of '80s legend John Parr (St. Elmo's Fire) to write some songs, produce and sing in a couple of tracks.
Also, some first class musicians have been part of the recording, including Wishbone Ash and Uriah Heep members.

The CD opens with "Keep On Turning", an uptempo bluesy melodic rock tune featuring the classy vocals of John Parr, who still owns a strong register. Sweepin' guitar solo by McConnell which has a great sustain.
"Repo Man" is the first song sung by McConnell itself. The man has a warm raspy voice that perfectly suits the classic rock mould of this track and the ones to come. Some tasty slide guitar and vintage keyboards drive the track.
The commercial and catchy "Ain't Gonna Rain (No More)" features another vocalist; Nick Page, which sounds fresh and young.

"World's Gone Crazy" is one of my favorites on this album (to be honest, all are really good). This midtempo semi-ballad includes acoustic guitars and a very organic percussion, all wrapped by wonderful harmonies.
"Working For The Weekend" has a truly catchy rhythm, "Remember Those Days" is a charming piano-ballad, while title track "My Kinda Heaven" has a great vibe, much in the Richie Sambora solo work style.
John Parr returns on "Don't Walk Away", another melodic rocker full of magic, and the album closes with the terrific instrumental "Rain On Flinders Street".


Practically with no promotion and only released in central Europe (a shame), "My Kinda Heaven" is a little Classic Rock gem that deserves to be listened by all rock fans out there.
This album is marvelous from start to finish, including really good songs, sweet arrangements and superb melodies.
Mick McConnell is a complete musician, not only plays guitar with style and a distinctive sound, he also has a rich and educated voice. The album benefits with the inclusion of the classy Parr pipes adding variation, and the long list of musicians involved perform their parts with professionalism.
A hidden beauty, not to be missed.

PINK FLOYD - The Dark Side Of The Moon [Experience Version] 2CD (2011)

Originally released in 1973, "The Dark Side Of The Moon" became Pink Floyd’s first # 1 album in the US, remaining on the chart for 741 weeks between 1973 and 1988.
One of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed albums of all time, "The Dark Side Of The Moon" also introduced the iconic album cover artwork by Hipgnosis featuring a prism representing the band’s stage lighting, the record’s lyrics, and the request for a ‘simple and bold’ design.

The new Experience Version presents the original studio album digitally remastered by James Guthrie, with bonus CD featuring a previously unreleased recording of "The Dark Side Of The Moon" entirely performed live at Wembley in 1974.
Also featuring a newly designed Digipak and a new 16 page booklet designed by Storm Thorgerson, including all lyrics.

This album is a must in anyone's record collection and the remastering of the original album on this "Experience Edition" is excellent.
Disc 2 contains a live recording of the band performing this album at Wembley, in November of 1974 which was originally recorded by the BBC.

Many of the tracks are extended on the live performance.
"On The Run" has an altered sequence compared to the album version, while "The Great Gig In The Sky" features Claudia Williams and Venetta Fields doing Clare Torry's performance as a duel.
"Money" is also pretty extended, and "Any Colour You Like" has five minutes longer than the album version (compare this to 'Pulse' and it has just a four man Floyd playing with a fire and passion).
The booklet and the sound on both CD's is excellent.

HANGAR - Acoustic But Plugged In! (2011)

HANGAR is a power / hard rock band from Brazil, formed by skilled drummer and percussionist Aquiles Priester (who has recorded on Di'Anno and Angra discs in between) in 1997.
The group has released four albums, being the last 2009s 'Infallible'.
Last year, after concerts held around their country, Hangar took the first steps to record their fifth CD acoustically in the studio.

A lot has been said about what kind of rock music is suitable for acoustic versions. The answer is simple: any kind.
If it turns out to be good or not, depends exclusively on the competence of the musicians playing. It is that simple.
Having said that, I guess I don’t even have to say that the very competent musicians of Hangar took their songs, normally brimming with weight and speed, and did a fantastic job on their first acoustic album "Acoustic, But Plugged In!".

Actually, the band had been performing various acoustic gigs and the release of such an album was a natural consequence for the band.
However, before beginning the recordings, a problem arose: vocalist Humberto Sobrinho had to leave the band due to personal problems.
As luck always smiles down on those who deserve it, Hangar found in André Leite the right person to take over the role: his clear and brilliant timbre proved to be versatile enough to reproduce themes recorded by no less than three different singers.
Besides, at moments in which the vocals, even on an acoustic album, demand a lot from a hard rock singer, it is clear that André is the right musician for the role.

Once this matter was solved and the repertoire chosen, the new arrangements forged by the band ended up being the aspect that stood out the most on the album.
After all, the themes gained the mellowness that acoustic interpretation demands, but maintained a good dose of their original power.
The repertoire, hand picked by the band, brings tracks of their four studio albums besides an unpublished track, "Haunted By Your Ghosts".


"Acoustic, But Plugged In!" is a pleasant and unexpected surprise.
These guys are serious musicians and their songs have terrific arrangements.
I heard one of their albums some years ago, displaying a pretty heavy style, but these songs aquired a completely new dimension on this new recording.
All the tracks on "Acoustic, But Plugged In!" are meaty, powerful but extremely melodic and full of harmonies.
As the title suggest, this isn't entirely an acoustic CD. The drums sound big (recorded in a dedicated studio with a room specially projected to provide the perfect ambiance) and the guitars are vital, with a fantastic tone. Singer André Leite is a real revelation, really, really good, with no accent at all.
This isn't your typically 'acoustic' recording, all here is big and organic. Somehow reminds me the powerful acoustic based material that Germans Frontline and Domain published years ago.
Brilliantly produced by Aquiles Priester, "Acoustic, But Plugged In!" is one of the surprises of the year.
Don't miss this one. Highly Recommended.

STEVE HACKETT - Beyond The Shrouded Horizon (2011)

Steve Hackett is a man who should not require any introduction.
Often mentioned as a main source of influence by many guitarists around the globe, Hackett has over 40 years experience making rock music and he shows no signs of slowing down despite having past the age of sixty.
What is most striking on this, his brand new album "Beyond The Shrouded Horizon", is how he continues to draw from his well documented back catalogue, both as a solo performer and through his time with Genesis, and still manage to keep his sound fresh and relevant by infusing his albums with a contrasting array of cultural influences.

To be honest, I don't like his previous CD 'Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth', an 'escapist' recording, boring and disperse in my humble opinion.
But "Beyond The Shrouded Horizon" is simply outstanding.
On this new recording we encounter all sorts of styles melded together to make an involving and cohesive whole, and without any of the tempo and mood changes sounding forced.
Some of these tracks are full blown Rock, others are melodic and calm which propel the listener further inside the mind of the artist. Every track seems to be the listener viewing through thirteen postcards of journeys from the creator.
Indeed, it could be bold enough to say that this may be the release that may well convert a generation of new listeners to Hackett’s music.
As he, himself, declares: “For all you restless souls out there, tighten your seatbelts, and join me at full throttle on a ride from the shores of Loch Lomond to the Rings of Saturn”.

Backed by his usual electric band, Steve takes us on an odyssey from opener "Loch Lomond", with the band marching over the hills on the back of an almost metal riff, to end with the epic symphonic tale of "Turn This Island Earth", on the way visiting many exotic corners of the globe and indeed beyond and inward.
On "The Phoenix Flown" a sustained effected guitar is the lead piece on the song over a mid-tempo progressive rock background with long drawn out drum sections and reverbs.
A great bluesy-rock riff that puts me in mind of early Uriah Heep crashes into the almost sedate introduction to "Prairie Angel". The guitar work on this one is just fabulous. Exceptional track.

Some of the songs are bridged with short acoustic pieces which add to the overall cinematic atmosphere.
"A Place Called Freedom" has some of the spirit of mid period Genesis that will be a joy for close followers of Hackett’s career.
The ukele on "Waking To Life" is later complimented by a distinct middle eastern feel, leading into some Kashmir-like sounds on the intro to "Two Faces Of Cairo", so far one of my favourite moments on the album. Both summon up great imagery, but do so with a subtlety that at times leads the listener to forget they are playing an album by a Western guitarist.
"Catwalk" on the other hand have muscle and depth, and a solid distorted guitar sound that provide exhilarating respite to the journey. Great rockin' track.
The longest song on the album is the closer "Turn This Island Earth", clocking in at just under 12 minutes. As befitting such a mini-epic, everything is thrown at this, the orchestra and the treated vocals at the start lending it an almost ethereal presence until a rock riff from Steve takes the song down another alley, but the theme is never lost.


On "Beyond The Shrouded Horizon", Hackett has created a cinematic blockbuster to rival anything he has produced over the years.
It's diverse, captivating, and on some passages, a truly masterpiece.
Throughout Steve’s guitar sounds more energized than ever, when one would expect a mellowing over time, and he even verges on heavy in places.
The production is impeccable, fitting perfectly with the composition's atmosphere.
Steve Hackett is certainly not resting on his laurels with "Beyond The Shrouded Horizon". It has everything you can ever want from an album; a sense of direction, great songwriting and excellent musicianship.
Awesome.

L.A. GUNS - Acoustic Gypsy Live (2011)

L.A. Guns (Tracii Guns version) is releasing an acoustic album of greatest hits called "Acoustic Gypsy Live", recorded in Los Angeles last February.
All the songs you would expect are included, like the classics "Never Enough" and "The Ballad Of Jayne".

According to the liner notes, when Tracii Guns was approached to do an acoustic album live, he was terrified because he hadn’t done an acoustic performance since grade school.
However Tracii was up for the challenge and delivered, bringing on crowd-pleaser Jizzy Pearl on vocals, Chad Stewart on drums and Danny Nordahl on bass.
Special guests were Teddy 'Zig Zag' Andreadis on keyboards and harmonica, former bassist Muddy Stardust who performed as a second guitarist and backup vocals-percussionist Doni Gray.

The opening track, "Crystal Eyes", begins with keyboard effects and percussion which drew in the audience as Tracii entered in on guitar while Jizzy Pearl sang with backing vocals done by the remainder of the group. This song still possess that haunting vibe and it's a fantastic choice for an acoustic makeover.
"One Way Ticket" is filled with vibrant guitar leads and drum rolls that move across the variation of tom-toms.
"Electric Gypsy" offers a great rhythm section, leads and percussion. I can feel the energy pulling together as the band becomes heavier and the track ends a roar from the crowd. Tracii's solo provide the listener a whole new feel for the melodic flow of this song.

In the middle of their set, they break into their hit, "Never Enough". Tracii does a fine job fulfilling all the leads on acoustic that are normally done on his electric. The band seems to be enjoying themselves while performing this piece delivering a great sound acoustically as they would have done electrically.
The band does the same for "Over The Edge", with pounding drums and screaming vocals by Jizzy. It's one of those songs that always pack a kick to the head regardless of the format, and it doesn’t disappoint here.

Throwing the listener off is the new song "Little Soldier", which is not what you’d expect from a glam metal band like L.A. Guns. This country-flavored track is surprisingly good, especially when a harmonica is thrown into the mix, the audience seems to have enjoyed it as they scream for joy at the end.
L.A. Guns performs a couple of covers; "These Arms Are Mine" by Otis Redding and Boudleaux Bryant’s "Love Hurts" made famous by Nazareth, the latter in a great form.
The album nears the end with “The Ballad Of Jayne” and of course "Rip And Tear" which leaves their fans crying for more.


"Acoustic Gypsy Live" offers a refreshing, melodious approach to these L.A. Guns classic tunes.
Plenty of bands have experimented with the acoustic set here and there; however most don’t realize the vulnerability that accompanies the transition from performing these songs in hard rock format to such a stripped down, intimate version.
Luckily, L.A. Guns didn't added overdubs, the show was pressed on CD as it was performed.
On this kind of recordings there is no where to hide. No effects or over amplification to gloss over imperfection. It is simply musician and instrument, where true talent is allowed to rise to the surface.
And for the most part, on "Acoustic Gypsy Live" L.A. Guns accomplishes the job.

At the end of the '90s, the now defunct Renaissance label edited a wonderful series of CD's entitled 'Heard It On The Radio'.
These series (3 volumes) included lost '80s AOR / Melodic Rock songs that once ruled the airwaves. But not only well known songs, also rather obscure bands only known by collectors, but truly marvelous.

Now, an indie label is taking the flag, publishing two new volumes.
Some of these tracks are from albums finally released on CD nowadays, but many not, and probably that never happens.

Vol.4 is really good, but "Volume 5" is even better, featuring rare songs from Hotel, The Night, Private Lightning, Lindisfarne among others.
So we have here a fantastic collection of '80s tunes, from an era when melody was the essential motto in music.
A Must Have for any Classic AOR / Melodic Rock fan.

Almost 100 years ago, the most important moment in the history of Electronic Communications took place, but was mainly seen as a disaster. A Morse Code distress call, made on April 14, 1912 resulted in the saving of many hundreds of lives from the RMS Titanic, lives that would have been lost without the new "radio".
In these 100 years, Titanic's ripples in the magnetosphere have seen people rescued from Space, the birth of TV, the massive surge forward of the Internet and mobile communications technology.
A world that is more and more "humdrum", but in which the Tangent find both positive and negative things to sing about.

The Tangent from Northern England have always taken a leading role in electronic communications.
In 1996 Tangent leader Andy Tillison Diskdrive posted the first ever promotional band MP3 file on the Internet on the day that the Fraunhofer mp3 codec was released, and the Tangent were celebrated for recording their first album using the Net to connect the UK with Sweden, making that album before the members at the time had even met each other.
Now they turn their musical attention to the forces that brought them together.
Would it make much sense to produce a progressive album about THE INTERNET!? That would seem forced and corny.
The Tangent does not do forced or corny for sure.

First of all, to those of you who haven’t kept up with the band’s history, it’s hard to find another group that has changed lineups so frequently.
The current lineup, which has probably lasted longer than any other, is certainly the best the band has ever been.
Vocalist/keyboardist/composer Andy Tillison is of course still the lead and Jonathan Barrett’s incredible bass duties are retained from the previous album, but we have two newcomers in Luke Machin on guitar and Tony Latham on drums.

The album opens up with the twenty minute epic "The Wiki Man". The track itself starts with the dreaded sound of a dial-up modem. That sound is certainly going to take a few of you back to the first Internet days. Musically this a complex, epic track full of synths effects and lyrics with an interesting point of view exploring the Internet phenomena. It's a lavish piece with a seemingly infinite amount of twists, even amongst all the electronics.
The Tangent offers more traditional prog and rock on "The Mind's Eyes". The bass is always present, and we get our first glimpse of guitarist Luke Machin's expertise.
"Shoot Them Down" is a prog ballad, a lighter piece with a delightful guitar solo. It fits very well between the syncopated previous track and the humor of the track to come as a solemn interlude of sorts in the center of the album.

Next is "Tech Support Guy", easily the most clever and entertaining song on the album. As the title suggests, it’s a humorous farce about how all kinds of terrible problems happen when the company tech support guy goes missing for the weekend. Musically, the old school Hammond, flute and light saxophone over a lively rock fusion foundation gives you a blissful listening experience. "COMM" is worth the purchase for this song alone.
"Titanic Calls Carpathia" is a discussion of major events in the development of technology (such as the Titanic and the Appolo 13 mission). It discusses how our technology leads us to places we don’t necessarily need to go. Our modern communication technology is absolutely amazing for us, and while there is some bad with the good, the good is stronger. Another epic piece with some terrific arrangements and twists.
This is the press release of COMM. The retail will include a cover of Genesis' 'Watcher Of The Skies' and a mega-mix. Also the ltd. digipak edition includes an extra track.


"COMM", despite its complexity is very easy to take to, it feels instantly rewarding but at the same time the many small nuances keeps you interested for a very long time.
Musically is fresh, unique, and most of all, modern. The sweeping progg symphonic soundscapes appear when they’re necessary. But it has a very electronic energy to the music that certainly aids in generating the modern feel. This is nothing but pure, modern prog.
And not only is it a feast for the ears and your adventurous musical mind, the lyrical theme which is a reflection on the world of today is another upside with this album.

V.A. - Advanced Releases sampler September 4 (2011)

Jimi Jamison (ex SURVIVOR singer) and Bobby Kimball (ex TOTO lead singer) are joining forces together in a duet album which promises to be one of the highlights of 2011 in the Melodic Rock scene.
The advanced single "Can’t Wait For Love" has a beautiful recurring keyboard refrain, a lovely hummable chorus and short but very sweet solo.


After a 20 year hiatus, international recording artist and actress Fiona is back in action with a new CD, 'Unbroken', produced by James Christian of the famed House Of Lords.
'Unbroken' contains mostly all new songs written by Fiona, James Christian, Tommy Denander, Holly Knight, and Marc Tanner.
Fans will embrace Unbroken’s intense melodic rock sound which is driven by guitarist/songwriter Tommy Denander and topped off with performances from original Fiona band member, Bobby Messano.
The advanced single “Loved Along The Way” hearkens back to her earlier albums with an irresistible melody and chorus.


After the release of their anniversary album "Branded" which early this year has charted in Germany, Bavaria’s finest rockers Bonfire are surprising their fans now with a second birthday party and a special present.
On the anniversary concerts all over Europe, the band played entirely their classic album 'Fireworks'. All these shows have been recorded, and will be released as "Fireworks - Still Alive".
This new CD offers a couple of bonus tracks including the song “I’m On My Way” – a touching tribute on the late Steve Lee, singer of Gotthard, and live recordings of the hits "You Make Me Feel", "Sword And Stone", "Just Follow The Rainbow" plus a different single version of “Let It Grow” from their current CD 'Branded'.


Swedish quartet Hardcore Superstar is celebrating ten years of awesome music by releasing a 'Best Of' compilation.
"The Party Ain’t Over ‘Til We Say So" will feature songs from records released between the years of 2000-2010.
The compilation also includes a brand-new single, “We Don’t Need A Cure.”


Norwegian rockers Lipstick Liontigers are finally releasing their new EP "Aliens from Outer Space (They´re Not of This Earth)".
The promotional single "So Many Miles" is a great classic melodic hard rocker in the vein of mid-eighties Europe and Tobruk.


Mr. Big UK were a British melodic rock&pop band, active in the 1970s and 1990s, best known for their 1977 Top 5 hit, 'Romeo'. They're back in 2011 with a new album, 'Bitter Streets'.
The first single “Georgia” (with a different mix) was released on the 12th Sept. It's a beautifully orchestrated melodic song.


Swedish Westcoast / AOR delicious band State Cows released a wonderful debut album last year in the best Airplay, Pages, Maxus tradition.
Do you miss 1983? In that case, their brand new single "Hard Goodbye" is a wonderful trip to these melodious years. Awesome tune.


Renato Abella is a musician/composer based in New York. He will be releasing an album titled “Beauteous Maximus” in December 2011.
The first single, "I Miss You" features Grammy award winning vocalist Dave Bickler, former lead singer of the band Survivor (Eye of the Tiger era) and lead guitar by Brad Gillis of the band Night Ranger.
Very good song that builds up to a wall of sound.


Mitch Malloy is currently hard at work on his new solo album, which will be on sale in time for Firefest and sees Mitch hoping to outdo his glorious debut in the melodic rock stakes. Having already written songs with Danger Danger’s Bruno Ravel and Harem Scarem’s Pete Lesperence, Mitch is having a blast writing for this new album.
"I think this CD will be more 80s than my first one" says Mitch, "I'm thinking of calling it 'Malloy 2011' or 'Mitch Malloy II' because I feel right now that it truly is the follow up to the first album, although you will hear some new 'from me' things that I haven't done."


Singer/songwriter Jeremey Frederick is a platinum-selling songwriter (under his full name of Jeremey Frederick Hunsicker) thanks to his association with the band Journey – and a writing credit on the million-selling 2008 release 'Revelation' – .
His 1st full length solo CD, “Every Little Thing,” will be released in the autumn of 2011.
The first single "This Is Your Life" is a terrific power ballad showcasing his unique and original voice.

Axel Rudi Pell's is releasing 'The Ballads IV', compiling the softer side of Pell's last releases plus new tracks.
One of the new recordings "Hallelujah", is also published as single featuring a different guitar solo, much calmer and melodic.

GIRLSCHOOL - Hit And Run Revisited (2011)

The career of Girlschool had its ups and downs; they did get involved in the NWOBHM thing, they did boost up success with their first three albums, they did fall in the make-it-to-America trap, they did fall apart for enough years being quite unstable, they did rise from their ashes in the previous decade, they did make their name to be heard again at summer fests and now they do scream as loud as they can that there’s no future without the past.

Their 2nd album "Hit And Run" was originally released in 1981 and is widely regarded as the best rock album ever recorded by an all-girl rock band. It gained a cult status after reaching #5 in the charts.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of their classic album, Girlschool decided to revisit these songs, and rather than just remixing it, have chosen instead to re-record it.
I'm always wary when people decide to mess with a classic - 'if it ain't broke then don't fix it', and changing a classic can actually spoil it, so how do Girlschool fare with this case?
Luckily the answer is: extremely well.

Girlschool's current line-up is amazingly the same as it was in 1981, apart from Jackie Chambers, who replaced the late Kelly Johnson.
Guitarist/vocalist Kim McAuliffe states about the album, "We've made quite a few changes. But I'm not gonna say anything about them because we're hoping that our fans will notice for themselves, just to see how well they know the original ones.
Of course it's a different sound, we have Jackie play now, obviously, instead of Kelly, and also again, studio-wise it's just a completely different experience because the technology now is incredible compared to what we had in those days."
I've certainly noticed a few small changes, but will leave you to find them for yourselves as the band intended - suffice it to say you'll need to know the originals pretty well to spot the changes.

Some things are certain for sure; the band have matured, and their sound is much more polished and a bit more melodic.
Girlschool are still on top of their game; the vocal harmonies match the recording quality and the performances are all spot on. And it’s all played as the band would play it now.
There are two bonus tracks; a re-recorded version of "Demolition Boys" (single from their 1980s' debut), which like the rest of the album sounds better than ever, and "Hit And Run" with German Doro Pesch doing the vocals. Doro performs all the vocals with Girlschool only joining in for the chorus. It's nice to hear a different version and Doro does a good job with this, especially as it wasn't written for her voice.


What can I say about these songs that hasn't already been said over the last 30 years?
Not much really; this is a classic rock album and if you've never bought it, now is the time to get it.
It is hard, and perhaps unfair, to compare directly to the original but "Hit And Run; Revisited" stands just as tall. It also shows just how good the band still are.
"Hit And Run Revisited" is essential for Girlschool fans, and a really good addition to every Rock collector regardless of the sub-genre of your preference.

SENCELLED - Sencelled (2011)

Capitalizing on the current AOR / Melodic Rock scene in Sweden, which produced last year's wonders Houston, Sencelled debuts with their self-titled album.
Sencelled plays melody driven rock / AOR in an updated style with hints of power rock & pop, blending some stunning harmonies with really cool hooks.
Think a mix of Stage Dolls, Rick Springfield and many earlier '90s Canadian bands such as Honeymoon Suite and Haywire.

First single "Breath Out" opens the album, a nice, catchy rocker with a fine AORish chorus and huge background vocals.
Follower "I Love The Way You Are" is an arena ready rockin' tune, while the Rick Springfield comparisons come to mind on next track "Wild One", filled with crunchy guitars and a sing-along chorus.
"Miracle" is a stunning melodic rocker with a killer hook, a song in the nineties Loverboy or Haywire style. It's one of the harder tracks on the album with some strong riffage.
"Oh Sarah" is a nice ballad that obviously was written for radio, with good vocals but the melody is a bit flat and not much impressive.
"Tommy & Gina", stealing the characters from Bon Jovi's Livin' On A Prayer, is not completely convincing lyrically. However, Sencelled redeems itself with a catchy chorus.
I don't like the overall approach of "Things I Feel", musically and sonic-wise.
"I Wanted You" is a very good hook laden modern AORish rocker with brilliant harmonies and cleverly keyboards in the background.
Last track "Carry On" is another good one, again sounding pretty Canadian, driven by tasty guitar riffs and a contagious melody.


"Sencelled" is a really good debut from these young Swedish melodic rockers, convincing and effective for the most part.
The band displays good musicianship and solid songwriting, with tons of hooks and melodies to enjoy. A couple of tracks have some modern rock stink, but that does not affect the final product.
They have some guests on the album such as Tommy Denander, Mats Olausson (Malmsteen, Houston), Kristoffer Lagerstrom (Spin Gallery) and Hank Erix (Houston). Ricky B Delin who produced Houston's debut album has done a first class work behind the desk and come up with a fine result.
Sencelled knows their Melodic Rock craft, and if you are a fan of this lovely genre, this CD will please you for sure.

AXEL RUDI PELL - The Ballads IV (2011)

As you might have gathered from the name, this is the fourth collection of Axel Rudi Pell's ballads, compiling the softer side of Pell's last releases since 2004, plus 3 new tracks.

Pell has been heavily criticized for these series, not only accused for the supposedly cash-in, but for covering some iconic songs into the ballad format.
The truth is that fans of the beleaguered but ultimately memorable entity known as 'Power Ballad' will rejoice over this collection.
Not only because all songs are perfectly recorded and mostly well arranged, but for the fact that Axel has one of the best singers around: Johnny Gioeli. Former Hardline vocalist is a pleasure to the ears.

The one original and new song on here, "Where The Wild Waters Flow”, is a great example of ARP’s talent. It's the definition of 'Power Ballad', with a killer hookline / melody. Somehow reminds me Slaughter.
The one that might get many bemused is the ballad treatment of the late Ronnie James Dio’s "Holy Diver". Pell decided to re-arrange the song completely, making a piano version out of it, featuring strings, a cello and a clean and melodic guitar solo. Surprisingly, it works well.
What doesn’t work so good is his version of Leonard Cohen’s "Hallelujah", which original 1984 version was featured heavily in Shrek (the movie). Not bad, just I am not completely convinced by the children choir included, but the song is saved by Johnny's emotional and soulful voice.
One song that does come over rather well is their version of Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight”. The band does enough with it to make it an interesting cover.
Other tracks previously appeared are really good power ballads, such as "Northern Lights" (where Gioeli shines), the late '80s "Glory Night", "Touching My Soul" and the dark "The Curse Of The Damned".


With "The Ballads IV" two things are clear; Axel Rudi Pell writes some terrific power ballads, and Johnny Gioeli still is a monster vocalist.
The combination of passionate guitar playing from Pell as well as the soulful vocals of Gioeli prove that these are some of the most memorable power ballads since the '80s heyday.
Almost any of the tracks on "The Ballads IV" would fit in perfectly on one of those 'Monster Ballads' collections that includes classic tunes.
So, if the Power Ballad is your thing, get this album soon as possible.

STEVEN WILSON - Grace For Drowning [2CD] (2011)

Steven Wilson is one of the most prolific and talented rock musicians active today.
The frontman and driving engine for modern progressive rock icons Porcupine Tree and collaborator in the melancholy rock group Blackfield, is also developing a strong solo career and even found time recently to remix five vintage King Crimson albums for their deluxe reissue editions.
Indeed, in the last two years, the singer/multi-instrumentalist has been heard on the Porcupine Tree concept album 'The Incident', the Blackfield CD 'Welcome To My DNA' and on his solo disc 'Insurgentes'.

"Grace For Drowning" is the second album released under Wilson's own name, and builds on the artistic inroads he forged with his 2009s exceptionally well received previous effort.
This brand new double album also represents a milestone in audio fidelity as the first-ever new rock album released primarily as a Blu-Ray video disc, with music in high definition 5.1 surround sound and accompanying video content for every song, starring Wilson as well as excerpts from the recording, mixing and mastering sessions, presented in interactive formats that bring fans closer than ever to the production process.

This truly is Steve Wilson's most ambitious musical project to date. Not only are the instrumentals simply superb but the layering of sounds creates such a wonderfully atmospheric experience reminiscent from the late 60's to 70's classic progressive rock music.
Steve managed to take the sounds and feelings of some of the best artists of that era while still making it distinctly his own. King Crimson, ELP and Jethro Tull are among some of the strong influences that this recording exudes.
The album features a bevy of talented musos: bassists Tony Levin, Nick Beggs and Trey Gunn (also on Warr Guitar), sax, flute and clarinet player Theo Travis, drummer Nic France and ex Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess, among others. A London string orchestra and a choir were employed for some tracks and arranged by Dave Stewart.

"Grace For Drowning" is certainly a work of art.
The gentle, lullaby-esque title track begins the first disc in a disarmingly tranquil fashion before the riffs of instrumental "Sectarian" twist and turn in a style that would make Robert Fripp proud.
The piano led "Deform to Form a Star" is genuinely beautiful and the metallic trip-hop of "No Part of Me" makes for a bewildering detour.
By the time the first disc closes with the double header of "Raider Prelude" and "Remainder the Black Dog", the album is veering into progressive jazz territory with delightful results. Yet despite the menagerie of influences and genres present nothing feels out of place.

The second disc again starts off gently with "Belle de Jour", but progresses into disturbing territory on the creepy "Index" and into full on avant-garde jazz land on the mammoth twenty-three minute "Raider II".
By the time "Like Dust I Have Cleared from My Eye" closes the album completely, Wilson has managed to lure the listener in not just with incredibly atmospheric soundscapes but also the odd genuine hook or two, and of course some incredible musicianship.


"Grace For Drowning" is not an album that will appeal to everyone. It is hard work at times and it takes a good few listens to fully appreciate, but the reward of perseverance is astonishing.
Although there are occasional moments of genuine heaviness, this is not a heavy record. Whilst some of Porcupine Tree’s recent albums could easily be filed in the metal section, this is an album that uses heaviness as a tool only sparingly, making it doubly effective.
Without doubt this is one of the most original records produced in many years and in years to come. It should, with any justice, be remembered as a landmark release by one of the world’s few true ground-breaking artists. The recording quality of the CD's is excellent which isn't surprising.
If you are a fan of progressive rock or genuinely good music in general, you owe it to yourself to pick up "Grace for Drowning" in any of the formats it will be offered in.

NEWMAN - Under Southern Skies (2011)

Mr. Steve Newman returns quickly to the Melodic Rock/AOR circle by following up what was one of his strongest albums to date 'The Art of Balance' released just last year.
This time around we have the album title "Under Southern Skies", which marks the 8th studio album from Newman since he got started back in 1997.
Steve has been on a consistent tear of the scene over the last few years releasing some very solid melodic laden albums and this new one is no different. If you’re fan of AOR then you have probably known about Newman for a long time, especially now he has been consider one of the most respected UK artists in the genre.

"Under Southern Skies" once again features Steve Newman on Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards, and Rob McEwen taking on Drum responsibilities. There is also an appearance by Shaun Bessant playing Lead Guitar on the track "If He Loves You".
Most of the songs have a high energy of melodious melancholy, with Steve's usual AOR touches of brilliance.
There’s some corking tracks, with the cream of the crop being opener "Killing Me", the great power ballad "Strength To Carry On", and the chorus heaven of "Ghost In The Night".
The more straight forward "If He Loves You" has patented the build up hook as it eases its way into a melodic solo halfway through the track.
The title track seems to plays more like a maturity in songwriting for Steve and Co, as the song progresses nicely with a modern hard rock feel.
The more typical stylistically sound of Steve comes out on the easy sunday morning sounds of "Fire With Fire", a simple laid back atmosphere tranquilizes the overall sound of this neat little track.
The album closer "Monsterrat" is another highlight, one of the best melodies ever crafted by Newman.


On "Under Southern Skies" Steve Newman has created again an album with rich textures and wonderful sonics, however they key to its success is the fact that it is crammed with excellent songs and great arrangements.
Hook-laden Melodic Rock / AOR songs with crystal clear production, catchy choruses and a very melodic disposition without any kind of rough edges.
If you haven't caught up with the rich and rewarding music of Newman yet, "Under Southern Skies" is an excellent place to start.

You like Michael Voss vocals or not, but the man has helped to make this material sounding cohesive and vital, not only on the arrangements, particularly on the production department. Has been passed many years since a Michael Schenker album sounded that good.
Taking a look back to Schenker classic albums of the '80s, "Temple Of Rock" includes pretty good rockin' tunes, with nice hooks and catchy choruses.
Ranging from melodious rockers such as "Miss Claustrophobia" (one of my favorites), "Fallen Angel" or "Saturday Night", to more old school harder tracks as "The End Of An Era", the great "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead" (with a welcomed Doggie White on lead vocals), or "Storming In", here is something for everyone.
Also, if you're looking for ballads, you have the bluesy "With You", and also there's room, of course, for the guitar frantics on both versions of "How Long".


In 2011 Michael celebrates his 40th jubilee as a recording artist.
And "Temple Of Rock" makes justice to his (tumultuous) career.
It is distinguished by an immense enthusiasm for guitar, including the participation of an incredible list of international superstars (check personnel).
The punchy and compelling production helps to enjoy this entertaining album, where most the tracks are good and fun to listen.
Michael Schenker and his new line up already completed a very successful UK Tour in July 2011 and a great Show at London’s High Voltage Festival being joined by surprise guests such as Rudolf Schenker, Doogie White and Jeff Scott Soto.
In October Michael Schenker will be touring the States with Leslie West and Uli Jon Roth under the name '3 Guitar Heroes'.

MAN ON FIRE - Chrysalis (2011)

Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, where they were founded by multi-instrumentalists Eric Sands and Jeff Hodges, MAN ON FIRE first appeared on the music scene in 1998 with the release of their eponymous debut album. It was followed by The Undefined Design (2003), which featured Kansas’ David Ragsdale on violin, and Habitat (2006), with Adrian Belew guesting on guitar (as well as Ragsdale’s return).
"Chrysalis", their long-awaited fourth album, sees the band expanded to a six-piece.

The group is centered around the keyboards and vocals of producer Jeff Hodges and the monster fretless bass lines of Eric Sands, with Elise Testone on guest vocals; Quentin Ravenel on drums; Jenny Hugh on violin, Cameron Harder Handel on trumpet, and a selection of tasteful guitar players.
MAN ON FIRE's sound combines melodic vocals, deep fretless bass, varied keyboards, synths, effects and heavy layered guitar soundscapes.
With influences ranging from Japan (the band), modern Rush and Kevin Gilbert, to eighties rock & pop, "Chrysalis" is a perfect marriage between the cream of the ‘80s musical crop and a genuinely progressive attitude, made of technical brilliance and unabashed eclecticism.

Right from the opening strains of “Repeat It” it becomes obvious that "Chrysalis" is not a common album. Its funky swagger, with Eric Sands’s meaty bass lines enhanced by synth bursts, provides a perfect foil for Jeff Hodges’ immensely expressive vocals. Organ flurries and airy keyboards, accented by guitar add layers of texture. The drums are excellent in helping to surround the sound with pinpoint emotion.
The haunting beauty of Jenny Hugh’s violin refrain joins the mix of pneumatic bass and weird electronics to make “In a Sense” one of the highlights of the album, driven to an exhilarating pace by the soulful vocal interplay between Hodges and Elise Testone, and tempered by more atmospheric moments. This track is full of syncopated rhythms intertwined with progressive elements, giving this band its unique sounding signature.

Keyboards open the skewed “A (Post-Apocalyptic) Bedtime Story” triumphantly. This song has an '80s rock ballad feel to it and with Hodges and Testone combining on vocals you are taken back to some of the great duets of that era. The trumpet (no the usual one, it's full of effects) provides the new inspiration necessary to make this unique. The bass and guitar work is excellent.
The title-track offers a nice twist on the old warhorse of the multi-part epic, with short sections strung together by a main theme, and made especially memorable by the wistful voice of Cameron Harder Handel’s multi-sonic trumpet. Eric Sands is joined by Vitaly Popeloff on guitar, providing both clean, melodic lines with an almost Gilmourian touch and harsh riffs, while the mood runs the gamut from hauntingly melancholy (as in Pt 3, “The Muse Returns”) to dynamic and muscular (as in Pt 4, “Free to Fall”), with distinct echoes of '80s bands as well as Rush or Pink Floyd.

With “The Projectionist” the band dive headlong into pure ‘80s territory with an irresistibly hard-funk, slightly angular number propelled by Quentin Ravenel’s drums, spiced up by bits of dissonance and softened by lovely vocal harmonies. The lead electric solos supported by haunting keys is just magnificent and an album highlight for sure.
“Tear Gas” goes even further, regaling the listener with a prime example of 'progressive dance' throwing weird electronic effects, razor-sharp riffing, slinky bass lines, soulful trumpet and great female backing vocals.
The Canadians Rush influence crops up in the most accessible track on the album, the upbeat “Higher Than Mountains”, whose mainstream appeal is subtly spiked by a slightly chaotic ending.
Then, when you thought things could not get more interesting, “Gravity (also included in an instrumental-only version) kicks in, wrapping up the album with 10 minutes of absolute bliss, and the splendid voice of Elise Testone as the icing on the cake. The song is so shaking and exhilarating that it makes you want to dance, the synergy between the instruments nothing short of astonishing, while the trumpet solo at the end, followed by sparse, wistful piano and recorded voices, is alone worth the price of admission.


"Chrysalis" is a very varied album pretty difficult to describe in words.
Eclectic is the word I guess. Their music is modern prog rock blended '80s rock & pop and a dash of refined art-rock.
Indeed, to borrow a metaphor from the world of cooking, "Chrysalis" is definitely not 'your mom’s prog'. It's much more than that.
Though the very mention of the ‘80s and prog in the same breath may conjure memories of extremely divisive albums such as Yes’ 90125 or the whole of Genesis’ output in that decade, Man On Fire possesses a warm, organic sound, with experimentation in the arrangements and terrific, unusual sound and textures.
"Chrysalis" is an album that sounds like no other, superbly recorded, produced and mixed.
Everything about this disc is unique and interesting. A lean, mean machine offering 58 minutes of perfectly balanced music that manages to hold your attention all the time.

THE ANSWER - Revival [bonus tracks] (2011)

THE ANSWER, for those of you who don't yet know, is a hard rock Northern Irish band. Frontman Corman Neeson has the unruly mane of a young Robert Plant, Paul Mahoen plays guitar, Micky Waters plays bass and James Heatley keeps the beat frantic on drums.
Since forming in 2000 they've have had massive success with debut album 'Rise' and an incredible amount of endorsement from the highest echelons of rock royalty.
Voted as Best Band by several magazines, they've supported The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Deep Purple, The Who. Jimmy Page is a fan, having turned up at one of their gigs.

Their sound is old school stomping rock with powerhouse numbers that reference the best of the '70s / '80s.
But on their brand new album "Revival" the band has updated their style and although based on the classic mould, this new material sounds really late eighties / earlier nineties.
That's clear on the catchy opener "Waste Your Tears", a hard rocker which somehow remembers House Of Lords circa 'Demons Down' era.
"Use Me" is another contagious rock piece with a melodic line and fat bass / blasting drumming.
"Caught In The Riverbed" is one the best tracks on the album and really sum up what The Answer is all about. It's a fast paced hard rocker and when the chorus kicks in it really takes your head off. There's a shining Les Paul-driven 25 bar long guitar solo that really rocks.
Another good one is the sing-along "Vida (I Want You)", a song with great hooks every turn of the way. Very catchy riff combined with tasty melodies.
"Can't Remember, Can't Forget" would shake manes with Bon Jovi for out-and-out unabashed radio rock. This is the most commercial song here, with a strong single potential.


With their previous 2 albums, The Answer was tagged as vintage retro-rock.
Forget that now, "Revival" is a very rocking and modern sounding album, with an '80s / early '90s spirit yes, but fresh and vibrant.
They offer here some of their strongest songs to date, with genuinely commercial hooks, killer Les Paul-driven riffs / solos and some awesome melodies.
Mahon's guitar technique is noticeably improved, as his excellent solos on tracks such as "Nowhere Freeway" and "Waste Your Tears" demonstrate. Cormac Neeson now really sings in his full potential reinforced by very well arranged backing vocals harmonies.
Remember, this is not a '70s retro band anymore, this album sounds fresh, hooky and '80s hard rockin' melodic.
"Revival" will burst the group into the album charts. Is that good.

THALAMUS - Subterfuge (2011)

Hard Rockers THALAMUS from Borlänge, Sweden, released about four years ago their debut full-length 'Beneath A Dying Sun'. This slab of 1970's influenced classic hard was a prime example to the fact that music does not need to be on the cutting edge of style in order to be quality.

For their brand new album "Subterfuge", they kick the listener all the way back - even deeper - to the glory days of classic rock, reinforced for the use of Hammond B3 cascades.
In doing this, the metal edge would be left by the wayside although this does not mean that THALAMUS has lost its potent, ballsy sound.
There can be no better example of this than "Still Dancing On My Grave" or "She Sells Desolation". These two songs are packed with mind-blowing riffs and loaded with fantastic hooklines. Not forgetting the vocals of guitarist Kjell Bergendahl; his clear, powerful voice serves as the perfect counterpoint to the thundering twin-guitar work while the backbone of the band comes in the form of a tight groovin' rhythm section.

However, the album do not opens with a bang, but slowly build up the tension with a wavering Led Zeppelin IV-like intro, into the great repetitive powerful riff of "Bring Down Mary".
After this, "When Goblins Cheer" brings it all into a heavy doom territory ala Black Sabbath, but with a very melodic chorus, which I also didn’t expect. This hypnotizing track contains excellent contributions of the guitar and some crooked after beat hooks.
The guys are getting more up speed with "Blind", reminding somewhat of good old Deep Purple complete with great keyboards and a catchy rhythm that adds further to the variety of Subterfuge. As you can see, this album is no one-dimensional affair, even when there is still a main focus on the riff.
"Shot To Hell" is an ultra-groovy and almost heavy funk piece which makes you impossible to sit still, while "Love Is Shining On The Dead Man" has a lovely retro, slightly psychedelic feel.
The album ends with "Through The Fields", the longest track on the disc, offering one of the best performances by vocalist / guitar player Kjell Bergendahl, cool solos and very nice atmosphere


The Classic Hard Rock vibe is strong on "Subterfuge". You can tell this is the work of some passionate rockers with a clear appreciation for vintage sounds in the vein of Deep Purple, Rainbow or Lucifer's Friend.
But THALAMUS prove that they are more than the sum of their influences.
This band play with such obvious gusto that it's hard not to get swept right along with them. Moreover, they know to turn great riffs into great songs.
Even the more laid back tracks can keep full attention of the listener and the sound of this CD is superb; a great authentic atmosphere of the early seventies combined with the advantages of modern studio techniques.
This is an absolute must for everyone into high-quality hard, ballsy seventies inspired rock .

KAYAK - Anywhere But Here (2011)

One group that never quite gained the wider fame it should have was Dutch KAYAK.
Formed around the talents of keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel and drummer Pip Koopman, Kayak played a mixture of melodic rock, pop&rock and progressive music since their 1972 debut.
While many prog related bands enjoyed massive success in the '70s, Kayak never quite got it together enough to break through in a big way.
However, in a topsy-turvy ride that featured a remarkable renaissance, they left behind a fine body of work that stands up to this day.

During the tour presenting their 2009 double CD, founder member drummer Pim Koopman dies of a heart attack. The rest of the tour is, of course, canceled.
Kayak announces that the decision, whether to continue the band without Pim or not, will be taken when the time is right.
After a tribute concert last year, the band announced that is working on a new project entitled "Anywhere But Here" and is -no surprise- dedicated to Pim Koopman, which was replaced by drummer Hans Eijkenaar, who also mixes the album.

"Anywhere But Here" is a very accessible, sweet to ears album, with mellow melodic tunes and some rockers.
It has in parts a feeling of John Wetton's Icon album, some '80s commercial sounds, but also prog elements.
Opener "Credible Lie" has one of the most modern arrangements on the album, with good progressions and orchestration, a catchy chorus and nice female vocals by Cindy Oudshoorn.
"November Morning" is definitely a melodic rock tune. I am a sucker for Edward Reekers vocals (he has released a superb solo album years ago).

The commercial "Behind The Scenes" features both vocalist for good effect. It's an uptempo pop-rocker with light prog elements that reminds some Jim Steinman's production out of Meat Loaf.
On the uptempo "Most Underrated Band In The World" (a statement?) the band rocks with good guitars and more edged vocals.
"In Between Tides" is another story. It's closer to Kayak's material of the last years. A slow song with juglar keyboards and fine vocal melodies.
"Demon In Her Eyes" is my favorite of the album. Very eighties and commercial with great vocal arrangements. A must for people who likes Camel of the 'Stationary Traveller' or '80s Alan Parsons Project.


"Anywhere But Here" is a pleasant, easy listening disc.
It has extremely melodic rock songs with a bit of commercial prog approach. No signs of doom, or pessimist mood music here.
Some tracks are pure beauty, some are more like average fillers, but the album flows nicely and sounds really good, thanks to the warm production.

HELIX - Skin In The Game (2011)

With 5 gold and 2 platinum albums already in the bag, Helix are one of the biggest Canadian rock bands in history.
Founding lead singer Brian Vollmer has kept the Helix legacy alive through multiple lineup changes over the years, but since their last 2009 album 'Vagabond Bones', the band features a mostly original line-up including Brent Doerner on guitar, Greg 'Fritz' Hinz on drums and Daryl Gray on bass and keyboards.

Now they are releasing a 5-track EP "Skin In The Game".
These songs are really just a continuation of the 'Vagabond Bones' CD, written by Vollmer together with previous guitar payer Sean Kelly, now replaced by Kaleb Duck.
So if you liked 'Vagabond...' you will like this EP as well.
If you never listened the last material from the band, you'll get an ’80s Hard Rock sound rooted in classic format, with solid melodic guitars and energetic vocals.

After the funny NASCAR-like guitar fueled instrumental opener "William Tell Overture" (including the classic Vollmer's 'wooow'), The EP title track "Skin In The Game" sets the style of the following tracks; fun rockers in the typical Helix style; crunchy melodious Hard Rock with some Blues and some Boogie influences, an overall feel-good atmosphere and the in-your-face attitude that we’ve all known Helix for for so long.
Listening the immediate sing-along chorus of "The Bitch Is A Bullet" (great solo), the 'ol and classy "Champagne Communist" (including keyboards) that reminds you their early times or the more slick and melodic "Angelina", this is unmistakeably HELIX.


"Skin In The Game" is better than I expected.
Brian Vollmer's voice still has the edge to carry the songs and leave his stamp on them, the guitars are energetic but clean and melodic, while the rhythm section is solid as usual, I like specially the drum sound.
More Melodic Hard Rock oriented the rather simply 'hard', this EP shows that these old gentlemen still have the grip in them and it has turned out to be a good, fun listen.

CHICKENFOOT - III (2011)

Chickenfoot, the supergroup of Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony and Chad Smith, released their self-titled debut album in 2009, a solid, hard-rocking, good-time album, with several key tracks that most anyone who liked the Sammy Hagar era of Van Halen would enjoy.

If you own their first album and you thought you knew what Chickenfoot was all about musically, you’re wrong. The group’s sophomore set is in no way a carbon copy of the first record.
Really, it’s no wonder they jokingly decided to call it "Chickenfoot lll".
True to lead singer Sammy Hagar‘s recent promises, the new album finds the rock supergroup expanding their sound considerably.
Of course there’s a fair share of Zeppelin-inspired stomp to be had on "III" but the band also tries out a few surprisingly direct heartland-style rock songs, as well as a sultry, R&B-influenced bedtime come-on, during the record’s compact 49-minute running time (this version has a bonus track).

The scorching opener “Last Temptation”, the twisting riffs and gang-shouted vocals on “Up Next”, the Deep Purple-referencing introduction of "Lighten Up", and the rockin' feel of “Alright, Alright” come off as classic Chickenfoot, as does the lead single and video of the instantly catchy, “Big Foot”. I can see this one as being a staple on the set list of all live performances.
However, “Come Closer” manages to slow things down considerably as it explores some R&B terrain and the funked-up “Dubai Blues” features some blues-rock along with a memorable riff.
Along the line of experimental comes “Something Gone Wrong” which offers up some unanticipated banjo along with acoustical guitar, as well as “Three and a Half Letters”, a song prompted by Hagar’s late manager who asked if they could write something pertaining to the current economic situation. Instead, Hagar chose to tackle the subject by reading some poignant letters written to him by fans as they described their suffering.
Bonus track “No Change” has a 'live demo feel, we-are-rocking-in-the-studio', and one guess if Van Halen 2011 doesn't should sound like this track. It's a great song with deep bass line, free drumming and a killer guitar riff.


"Chickenfoot III” is an unexpectedly diverse album, and that's a good thing for the band.
Throughout the recording, Sammy brings it lyrically and vocally, and Michael’s solid bass playing and completely unique background vocals are evident.
For one thing, who knew Joe Satriani could be this much fun, or fit so well into a band dynamic? Every minute you turn around on this album, the instrumental guitar whiz is up to something creative that legitimately contributes to the song in question, without ever overstaying his welcome or overshadowing his bandmates.
The band are still rocking their balls off, but they are very serious about the music they are pumping out. While the first album still had the stink of ‘experiment’ and ‘getting to know each other’, musically, this one fits like a glove.
Chickenfoot are a band and "III" proves that this is more than just a weekend recreation for the four talented musicians.

TIME GALLERY - Time Gallery +4 (2011)

I don't know how many of you out there own one or (even) two albums of Time Gallery, but I suspect not that many.
For the uninitiated, this Scandinavian band has released two studio albums: a self-titled one in 1989 and 'Kaleidoscope' in 1992.
Their style of music can be described as a catchy mix of hi-tech AOR, stylized Melodic Rock and European Westcoast.

Until recently one had to pay silly prices to get hold of a Time Gallery album, but that's behind us now, because the debut album it's being re-issued, remastered and including and no less than four additional tracks.
The bulk of the songs were written by vocalist Patrik de Vee and keyboarder Johan Stentorp and it has to be said: there are many pearls to be found, such as the strong opener "Echo Park", "The Promise", the outstanding "The Letter" or the TOTO-ish "I'll Be Gone".

The four additional bonus tracks include the band's first ever 7'' single "Carefree Days" from 1986, and its B-side "Hearts Of Hunger". The single (vinyl only) was produced by Ulf Wahlberg & Time Gallery.
"Gentle Touch" was originally the B-side of their 1991 'Love Smash' single which was produced by Time Gallery, Keith Olsen & Nik Foss and written by Johan Stentorp, Patric de Vee & Time Gallery.
"Give It Up", previously unreleased, is rare private cassette outtake from the early years.


Time Gallery’s debut album was produced by American legend Keith Olsen (Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Whitesnake, Rick Springfield, etc.), so you can expect a brilliant sound.
Rick Springfield was so impressed by the album that he almost invited Time Gallery to be his support act (and also as backing group!) on his upcoming USA-tour. Besides, they were recommended to various booking agencies by the prestigious core force behind the acclaimed I-Ten band/composers Tom Kelly & Billy Steinberg.
Also contributing on "Time Gallery" is glorious Airplay / What If vocalist Tommy Funderburk (uncredited on the prints of the original release).
All tracks have been carefully Digitally Remastered for this re-issue, strictly limited to 1000.
A must for any Westcoast / AOR fan.
